Sarfait was the location of
Operation "Simba" in April 1972 which was one of the three major turning points in the
war against the insurgents in Dhofar.
The concept was simply to block the adoo supply routes close to
the border with Yemen in order to prevent supplies reaching
other areas. A battalion group from Akoot would occupy the
Sarfait position above the escarpment. The adoo supply line -
the Ho Chi Minh Trail passed below the escarpment, the Capstan
feature and the sea. Weapons and ammunition could be transported
from the border to the central sector in 10 days and messages
could be taken in three days. |
