| Hedgehogs |
| The Hedgehogs were fortified positions that were
situated between RAF Salalah and the jebel.
The idea was to intercept any adoo who came onto the plain at night to
bring the airfield into the range of their mortars. The adoo 82mm
mortars weighed over 60kgs and often the base plate would be brought in
one night, camouflaged and left in position, and the tube brought in the
next night. Their range was nearly 7kms The armament in the Hedgehogs comprised the usual small arms plus GPMGs and 81mm mortars (which weighed in at 35kgs with a range of 5.5km) Surveillance could be effected with illuminating rounds or by use of the rather primitive ZB298 radar. ZB298 or GS No14 was manufactured by Marconi Avionics and in theory had a range of over six miles. Interpretation of what it picked up was, I understand, difficult. Can anyone recount their experiences using ZB298 ? Webmaster Map of the various defensive lines around RAF Salalah |
